GOOB!

10 May

So…there was a carnival going on down the street from me this past weekend. I was a little annoyed because I knew  it was going to jack up my commute to work. But then I saw it…the Tilt-A-Whirl. I swear to God there are two frivolous, stupid, things the five year old inside me wants: a Slurpee machine and Tilt-A-Whirl in my backyard, like I’m that kid from ‘Blank Check.’

My love affair with this cheap ass, rickety, ride started at the Wasco Rose Festival, probably in 1990. The Festival is pretty self explanatory and the weekend it’s held on is always hot as the Dickens.

Grandma first took me to see the parade and taught me how to walk “caddywompus” across the street. The parade looked great…as a five year old. As we sat on the curb, watching the “floats” go by I heard a man yell, “HEAT,” to which my Grandma responded, “GOOB!” I had no idea what the hell was going on.

“Heat” was apparently a nickname of Grandma’s, short for “heat lips.” That’s how I learned at an early age that Grandma used to be quite the foxy lady. The man hollering at her was the Mayor of Wasco, Goob. I don’t know Goob’s real name but I think his nickname says enough about him and his mayoral abilities.

After the “parade” Grandma took us to the carnival and my love affair with the Tilt-A-Whirl began. I rode it so many times that I snagged my acid washed denim roper (embellished with pink rosettes made from ribbon, I was appropriately dressed) as I ran out to get back in line to ride again. I remember being worried that Mom would get mad that I snagged my new outfit. She never found out, until now. Sorry Mom, I was an addict and had to get my fix.

I read that George Lindsay, aka Goober Pyle from ‘ The Andy Griffith Show,’ passed away on Sunday. He will forever be linked in my mind with Mayor Goob and the Tilt-A-Whirl. Rest in peace Goob.
